Basketball teams
1. Purpose of BCPS Middle School Basketball Teams
- To help students understand what is required of a student/athlete when they get to high school. Academics, behavior in school and on the court, sportsmanship and physical discipline are all qualities this program is working to instill in the middle school student/athlete. There is no cost for this program. This is not a recreation program.
- Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade boys/girls who are interested and meet the qualifications below can try-out.

We play 11-13 games per season against other middle schools in the program. Game times are either 4 pm or 5 pm. The boys and girls teams will alternate game times. All games are played with 6 minute quarters with overtime if needed. The season concludes at the end of January.

Best Buddies
Students of all grade levels who are interested in forming lasting friendships with students who have an intellectual disability are encouraged to join Best Buddies.
Best Buddies is a nonprofit international organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Students would establish friendships with students with intellectual disabilities within the school and maintain a minimum weekly contact with that person at school as well as participate in monthly group activities at school. Chess Club
Cockeysville Middle School is the seven-time County Champion. Learn to play. Learn to improve your game. The focus this year will be on instruction. Tournaments-Prizes-Instruction-Trophies-Parties-Team Play-Individual Competition. One of the largest clubs in the school.
Meets Tuesdays 2:45 - 4:00 and possibly Thursdays ( optional instructional sessions ) 2:45 - 4:00 starting in November.

Computer Club
Any students who are interested in working with various technology in CMS. It can include things such as setting up inventory, wiring, wireless troubleshooting, working on devices with Mr. Drought, television, projector, and printer issues. You can come as early as 7:15 and finish with the 7:50 bell. You can come every day, once a week, or once a month. Whatever fits into your schedule. Every day brings a new challenge.

Cougar Learning Lab
CMS offers an after school teacher-supervised location in the CMS library for students to work on homework, projects, research, and to get organized! Several teachers are on hand to coach students who may have questions or need assistance. Library resources, such as books, computers, and other reference materials are available for use. Students may sign in at the library and work in a quiet setting from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week and are expected to work for an hour. Transportation must be provided by parents/guardians, and must be arranged ahead of time. All students need to be picked up promptly. CMS behavior rules and expectations apply.

Cross Country
Cross Country is an after school running group that meets from September- early November. Any student can join the cross country club. The club meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The club practices at CMS, from 2:45- 3:45 p.m. Competitions are also held at various middle schools around the county. The runs vary in distance, but are typically 1-2 miles in length. Physical examination, athletic permit, and health history forms are required for participation and can be picked up from any physical education teacher.

CYC (Cockeysville Youth Center)
The Cockeysville Youth Center (CYC) is an activity sponsored by the Cockeysville Recreation Council. It is a monthly Activity that offers dancing, sporting activities, ping-pong, board games with Mr.Segal for CMS students. It is a fun night for students to hang out with their friends in a secure, safe environment.
Scheduled CYC's: TBD
Times: 7:00 - 10:00 pm. SHARP!!! Students can be dropped off at the front doors to CMS. Parents must fill out a Registration Form either online or on paper and hand deliver it the FIRST time attending CYC. The form is a one time thing each year.
Cost: It costs $5.00 per student. Refreshments are available for purchase.

Pick-up: ALL STUDENTS MUST BE PICKED UP BY AN ADULT. NO STUDENT WILL BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE BUILDING WITHOUT AN ADULT. The adult must come into the school lobby to retrieve their children and be checked out by a chaperone.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - If we do not have enough parent volunteers for any given CYC, it will be canceled. The safety of all students is a priority.

Dance Club
The Cockeysville Dance Club meets every Wednesday morning at 7 am. Our first Dance Club day for the 2019-2020 school year is Wednesday, Sept. 11th. All students are invited to attend and can start during any part of the school year. The students will learn popular line dances as well as social dances which include swing, tango, waltz, cha-cha and foxtrot. The Dance Club has created and will continue to create line dances for all students in PE classes and for CYC.
The CMS Dance Club has been featured in The Towson Times and on their internet page. The Club was invited to instruct the 8th grade students from Gilman and Roland Park Country School in Swing Dancing during the fall of 2011 and helped instruct students at Dumbarton Middle School in 2013. The Club performed dance routines at Padonia Elementary’ s Fall Festival. The Club also attended the Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) fall conventions in 2010, 2011 and 2014.
The Dance Club participates in field trip dances outside of school. They have attended dances at The Friday Night Swing Club four to five times a year and have attended the ballroom dances at Towson University. This will be the third year that the Dance Club will participate in “Fall into Goucher Dance” fund raiser. The Dance Club also performed at the Baltimore County Retired School Personnel Association Fall Luncheon meeting in October of 2018. Lots going on in Dance Club this year with the co-sponsoring of three after-school dances with the National Junior Honor Society. There are tentative activities in the works with Towson University. So stay tuned. Dance Club will also take over the concession sales at this year’s basketball games to raise money for various dance events and Outreach Programs for the community.

Green Club
The Green Club is an environmental club that meets after school twice a month and strives to:
- Provide students with the opportunity to learn more about their surroundings and participate in environmental service projects at school and in the community (yes, you get service hours for club participation)
- Promote environmental awareness and change in the community
- Gain a broader perspective of nature and the world around them that will hopefully continue throughout their lives

Intramurals - Before School
OPEN GYM:
Morning intramurals will be held in the month of Sept on the following days: 9/19, 9/20, 9/26 & 9/27. For the rest of the year, intramurals will be held every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings starting at 7:10 am until 7:50 am. Students will need to sign up each quarter in order to participate. See your PE teacher for details.

Intramurals - After School
The Cockeysville Middle School Physical Education department will be offering after school intramural. This is an opportunity for your child to participate in physical activity outside of the school day. The activities will vary depending on student interest. Some activities, in the past, have been basketball, floor hockey, soccer, flag football, pin knockdown, badminton, and many more. ANY student is allowed to participate.
After school intramurals will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays, after school, from 2:45- 3:45. BEGINNING TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th.

Lipstock
Lipstock is an annual lip-synching competition amongst CMS 8th graders. Lipstock auditions begin in April and students must be available to practice with their group after school. Mandatory Tuesdays & Fridays in May and daily in June. The event is held at the end of the school year. There will be a matinee and an evening performance. Students compete to win prizes and have an amazing time in the process.

Math Club
Math Club is a place to explore math related topics of your choice such as puzzles, robotics, coding, tangrams, and pentominoes. We also work on competition questions such as MathCounts, 24, and Next Thought. We meet on Thursdays after school until 3:30 pm in room 32.

National Junior Art Honor Society - (NJAHS)
The NJAHS is a nationally recognized club sponsored by the National Art Education Association. The NJAHS is open to selected GT Art students in grades 7 and 8. Participants are required to maintain a B average (or higher) in art, participate in community service and assist with the promotion of art in the school, community and nation. Students have participated in activities such as: Harvest for the Hungry posters, murals for the Towson Business Association, creating a cougar logo in the school's office, Pinwheels for Peace, Angels for Soldiers, created displays within the school and provided art work county exhibits, murals for the Baltimore County Public Library, lighthouse paintings for the CMS BCPS initiative, play scenery for "Schoolhouse Rocks" drama production. The club meets on Friday afternoons.

National Junior Honor Society - NJHS
The National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in official Honor Society activities. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Painting Club
Painting Club is an in depth after school exploration of color and the fundamentals of painting. Students will learn basic and advanced techniques in watercolor.
Student will also understand how to use complement colors and aspects of mixing paint. Painting Club will be an all year workshop consisting of different sessions. Students will begin with learning to set up painting palettes and identifying color hues and combinations. We will start with basic wash techniques and how artist use them to achieve desired affects. We will begin some observational paintings, moving into more complex and difficult subject matters to paint.

Strings of Cockeysville (SOC)
SOC is an honors orchestra open through audition only to any orchestra student entering Grades 6-8. Rehearsals will take place each week throughout the school year on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:45 (additional rehearsals may be scheduled if necessary). Student participation is required for the winter and spring orchestra concerts, the elementary Feeder Fest in December, the area orchestra festival concert in May, and the Music in the Parks competition trip to Hershey Park.

STEM Club
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We will meet alternating Wednesday's after school in room 16, 2:30-3:30. During club meetings students will be given challenges such as building the tallest tower, the strongest bridge, or build the paper airplane that can fly the longest. Students will work together to solve these challenges. We
meet from October-February.

Student Government Association
The Student Government Association is a student-led service organization. The SGA provides a chance for members to develop leadership skills as they coordinate service projects for the school and community, and organize social activities to promote school spirit and pride. The SGA also provides an opportunity for students to exchange ideas among the faculty and student body. Meetings are open to any interested member of the CMS student body.

Tennis
Through a partnership among the BCPS Office of Athletics, the BCPS Office of Equity and Assurance, and the Baltimore Tennis Patrons, a free after-school tennis program is offered at Cockeysville Middle School. The program operates for seven weeks in the spring from approximately mid-March to mid-May and is open to 6th-8th grade students. The program includes a mid-season “play day” and will conclude with an exciting culminating doubles tournament event in which players will compete against other Baltimore County schools. Baltimore Tennis Patrons will supply all necessary equipment and supplies for the program, including racquets and tennis balls but players are encouraged to bring their own racquets if they would like to. Students will learn or improve basic tennis skills and also benefit from the health-and-strength building benefits of interval exercise through tennis. An interest meeting will be announced in the spring to provide students with more information on the program. Practices are typically Tuesdays-Fridays from 2:30-4:00 pm.

United Voices
United Voices is a student-run club that provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, and talk about issues relative to the LGBTQ student community. The club’s mission is to help create a safe and affirming school environment for all students. Allies are welcome! United Voices meets on Thursdays from dismissal until 4:00pm in the School Counseling Office. The first meeting will be on Thursday, October 3rd, 2019. WOC
Winds of Cockeysville (WOC) is our after school Honor Band. It is comprised of approximately 50-60 musicians in all grade levels. Membership is by audition only. WOC meets once a week as a full ensemble. They perform on all school concerts, the Cockeysville Area Festival, and each year they represent CMS at the annual Music in the Parks competition held at Hershey Park. WOC meets Wednesdays (2:40-4:00) for full rehearsals. About once a month, the Wednesday rehearsal is extended to 5:00 pm followed by a pizza party.

Yearbook
Our yearbook is the Cockeysville Middle School’s book of memories. The staff is composed of enthusiastic sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who enjoy challenges. They will learn how to properly take photographs, construct creative page layouts, and use online digital formatting software to transform memories into an actual BOOK!
